Small Roadtrip Day One

My dear readers. Only one day has passed since my last post. If you didn’t already read about Montreal then go and check it out after reaching the end of this post.

The one main reason I deliver the next update on my travels so soon is that I want to have a marker for Quebec on my visited locations map =) So here we go:

The car

I rented the smallest and cheapest car available for my little road trip through Quebec. As you can see the rental company decided to not give me a budget car, instead they gave me a Jeep Patriot. It’s a very nice car to drive around (at least in Canada where there is enough space for such large vehicles) and the sound system delivers quite some bang. I’m really looking forward to drive through some interesting landscapes in this car.

The drive

From Montreal to Trois-Rivières I took the route 40. From there on I drove on the chemin du roy (Kings Road) all the way to Quebec. This route follows the water and you drive past a lot of small villages. Unfortunately the landscape was very flat, so there wasn’t much to see in the distance. But the colorful trees compensated for that more than enough.

I would say the driving here in Canada (and most likely in the USA too) differs very much from the driving in Europe. Back at home I drive in order to reach my destination, there are a lot of rules that make the behavior of the other cars on the road very predictive.

Here in Canada you get a feeling of freedom when you drive along your way. It’s like you want to reach your destination together with all the other people. Given that you can overtake other cars on the right and that there are much more lanes to drive on, the speed limit is generally lower than in Europe. The first day was a little bit exhausting to drive: A new car, an unknown area and a different style of driving. I managed to arrive safe and sound and can’t wait for my drive to Matane tomorrow.

The town

I didn’t read a lot about Quebec beforehand. I therefore obviously didn’t expect it to be this beautiful (I’m only speaking about the old town, the rest is pretty much everywhere the same). If you ever visited some European fortresses before you get the feeling they took those designs and implemented them in big. It’s a stunning city but much like with the smaller European counterparts there is not much more to see and I would probably get quite bored after a week in this city.

The room

I found a nice hotel/motel a little bit outside of Québec City. This is the first time in a real hotel room for me in North America. For once I have my own non shared toilet and for a few bucks (worth it) I had my own bathtub. Not remembering the last time when I used a bathtub I couldn’t resist and wasted a lot of hot water in order to have some Netflix and chill..ing in the bathtub=)
