Part 1/4 of the Roadtrippin’ Series
We planned to be at South Lake Tahoe by the evening. Instead of driving directly on the fastest route we decided to take a more scenic route and stop from time to time to enjoy the things offered to us by our route.
From San Francisco to Sacramento
As we were travelling by car and the weather was nice, we drove to some places in San Francisco that require the mobility of a car (or a lot of time and a very good pair of shoes) and are best enjoyed without fog.
The next stop was at the home of the FBI: Sacramento. While the FBI headquarters is not open for tourists, the “Old Town” is. I don’t know how much of this historic old town was built for tourists, but it is quite charming. It was around noon, the sun was burning down and the temperature was uncomfortably high. So we hopped from store to store to restaurant with running climate controls. The locals must be very nice people as they tried to cool down on the outside as well – they left all the doors open with running ACs.
Wine Tasting
During our next leg of the journey to Lake Tahoe we drove by several wine tasting signs. Thus, we (or rather I after an abrupt deceleration) to spice up my driving style and taste some wines.
Lake Tahoe
Finally, we arrived at our motel in South Lake Tahoe. The sun was still up and we received a pass for the local beach at the check-in. Thus, we went for a quick swim in the lake (1900 meters above sea level) and enjoyed the sunset at the beach. As we had eaten quite generous portions at Sacramento we decided to forgo dinner and eat some s’mores instead (which were generously offered by the motel).
After some waffles for breakfast, we went on our first hike on the Rubicon Trail. This trail follows the shore of Lake Tahoe around the Emerald Bay.
